HDR Photography

Lauren Moon

HDR(High Dynamic Range) is also known as three photos of the same scene with different shutter speeds. This results into a bright, medium and dark photograph.

There is a software that combines all the photographs into one. This helps brings out the highlight, details, shadows. This is also the same task the human eye can do on the scene.

light Drawing

Light Painting a blog by Stormy Hickman

This technique began in the 1880’s and was used to create images, but photography’s did not think or consider it a type of genre until 1935.  At that time, artist Man Ray created interesting effects with light and a camera.  He became famous for writing his own name in cursive with light.  This was a first and was considered impressive and a break through for this type of artistry.

There are three categories to describe light painting with photography.  They are:

  • Light Drawings: the light source is seen by a camera and there is a long exposure to a light source
  • Kinetic Light: there is a stationery light source while the camera moves and creates specific colors and designs
  • Light Painting: there is a hand-held light source to illuminate parts of the scene that will appear in the painting

Recent artists recognized for their contributions to light painting include:

  • Tokihiro Sato-Currently a professor in Tokyo and known for his 1988 work called Photo Respiration.  One is known as Breathing Shadows and the other is Breathing Light.  He exposed the film for up to three hours to produce these paintings.
  • John Hesketh-Lives in California and created his first light series in 1985 that focused on his backyard and were called, “Homelife.”  He uses a color filter and each photograph takes 3-6 months due to his attention to detail and use of black crayons.  Recently, he was noticed for his art called, “Los Angeles” which contained many color filters and different light affects of angels.  It is very colorful and appealing to one’s eyes.
  • Eric Staller-Can be credited for sharing his work within a book.  His book is called, “Out of My Mind” and contains 150 color photos of his work.  The pictures are bright and exciting to view.

John Kraus: Space Photography

Anthony Merlo

John Kraus is a spaceflight photographer from Satellite Beach, Florida. The excruciating attention to detail and the hard work that goes into the launch process is what drove John to capture the moment where everything is perfect in one frame. His photographs show the moment thrusters are boosted and the flight path of the ship, the use of low shutter speed and exposure to depict that is what interests me about his work.

Robert Clark- Hunter Nusz

Robert Clark is a freelance photographer currently working in New York City. He photographs for books such as the book that would later become a movie “Friday night lights”. He documented the lives of the Odessa Permian high school football team by being the team photographer for that season. The first picture above shows the captains walking out for the coin toss. This photo ended up being on the cover of the book “ Friday night lights” and was also recreated for the movie poster as well. A lot of his photos from that season inspire different scenes in the movie. Robert Clark was also present in New York City on September 11th 2001. He was on the rooftop of his building when he caught the final moments of United 175 before it crashed into the second tower of the world trade center. Here is a link to his page that tells a little more about him.
