I found this technique on a site called Digital Photography School. A blogger had added it and I thought it was really good quality for not seeming to have that difficult of a set up. The blogger, mmatasic took a white LED bicycle light and covered it with a piece of orange cardboard. The black background was created with the use of a piece of fabric.
His shutter speed was low, he said around 30 seconds with an aperture of f/4.5. He recommended playing with levels though, to satisfy whatever look you were after. The blogger did say he had done slight post-production work on his images, mostly with color correction and black levels in a program called Lightroom. I just thought it was a really neat outcome for very little work. Well, it did take the photographer “100+ tried” to get the shot right. So, maybe a little more work than it sounds like!
