Ever since I was younger, I have loved Marilyn Monroe. I loved her views on life and body image. I loved how she was not a size zero but still felt comfortable in her own skin. I have had pictures of her hanging in my room for years, so I decided to figure out who the photographer was behind some of her famous photos and the story behind them.
This picture of Marilyn Monroe is one of the most famous and iconic pictures of her ever taken. When most people think of her, they think of this picture. The picture was taken on the set of The Seven Year Itch in New York City. This photo was taken by Sam Shaw. This photo was taken in 1954. Marilyn was actually standing on a subway grate, and the wind from passing subways is what caused her dress to blow. Sam Shaw happened to capture the moment. He took a lot of pictures of Marilyn over the years and she even nicknamed him Sam Spade after a character in The Maltese Falcon.
Here is a link to see some of the other pictures Sam Shaw has taken of Marilyn Monroe.
This picture of Marilyn Monroe was taken by Milton H. Greene. Milton Greene was assigned to shoot Marilyn for Look magazine. Milton was a young photographer at the age of 27 when he was assigned to shoot Marilyn, and upon meeting him Marilyn exclaimed “why your just a boy”. But the two later hit it off and became close friends. He took quite a few photos of Marilyn and here is the link to see more of them and to read more about how Milton got started in photography and see more of the pictures he has taken of her over the years.
This picture of Marilyn was taken by the famous photographer Eve Arnold, who is known for her pictures of famous women such as Marilyn and also Jacqueline Kennedy. This picture was taken in the Nevada desert in 1960 while on the set of the movie The Misfits. Eve Arnold is known for snapping photos of Marilyn’s most private moments such as her reading a book.
