Jim Brandenburg was born in 1945 in Luverne, Minn. He is an environmentalist, a nature photographer, and a filmmaker. His career includes over 10 years as a newspaper photographer, and 30 years as a contracted photographer for National Geographic Society. Jim was commissioned by the United States Postal Service to create a set of wild life stamps, which were released May 14, 1981.
His work has been featured in magazines, such as; Life, Newsweek, The Smithsonian, and GEO. Also, his work was featured on major television and radio networks including; ABC’s Prime Time Live, CBS News Sunday Morning, and Dateline NBC, as well as National Public Radio’s All Things Considered.
Jim and Judy Brandenburg, with the help of dedicated supporters in Luverne, Minn., established the Brandenburg Prairie Foundation in 1999 . Its mission is to promote, preserve and expand the native prairie in southwest Minnesota. Through numerous projects, the Brandenburg Prairie Foundation heightens awareness of the prairie’s irreplaceable beauty and significance.
